20730The Brothers Size
The Abbey Theatre is delighted to present The Brothers Size by Tarell Alvin McCraney, one of America's most thrilling new writers in a production of the Foundry Theatre in association with the Public Theater, New York. Playing fast and loose with West African myths, The Brothers Size brings contemporary rhythms together with ceremonial traditions to tell the modern-day story of the Size brothers - Ogun, an auto mechanic, and Oshoosi, a recent parolee. In this fresh new drama, the audience is at once the community, the witness and the judge. The Brothers Size is a provocative, joyous and heart-breaking tale of what it means to be a brother and a man. This Foundry Theatre production was the hit of the Public Theatre's prestigious Under The Radar Festival in New York in 2007 and it runs at The Peacock Theatre from May 30th to June 14th with previews staring on May 16th. Tickets range from €14 to €22 and are available from ticketmaster and usual outlets.

20581The Seafarer
Conor McPherson (The Weir, Dublin Carol, Shining City) makes his Abbey Theatre debut with the Seafarer, with previews opening on Friday May 2nd. It's Christmas Eve and Sharky has returned to Dublin to look after his irascible, ageing brother who's recently gone blind. Old drinking buddies Ivan and Nicky are holed up at the house too, hoping to play some cards. With the arrival of a stranger from the distant past, the stakes are raised ever higher. In fact, Sharky may be playing for his very soul... Though it hardly sounds like a barrel of laughs on the surface, The Seafarer is a non-naturalistic powerful and unsettling tale filled with banter and dark humour. The Irish Premiere of The Seafarer is directed by Jimmy Fay and runs at from May 7nd to June 7th. If you do find yourself in the audience, please try to fight the urge to start singing "the crime-busters of the sea, do, do, do, do, do." It is not appropriate.

20769An Audience Without Dermot Morgan
'An Audience Without Dermot Morgan', a fundraising event to provide an annual bursary to emerging Irish comedy writers, will be hosted by the Dermot Morgan Foundation at Vicar Street, Dublin on Monday June 9th. The evening will mark the official launch of the Foundation which has been established in recognition of Dermot Morgan's legacy to Irish comedy. His skills as a writer, stand-up and actor have been well documented but he was also generous with his time and practical help to younger up-and-coming talent. A fantastic line-up of our much loved comedians such as Ardal O'Hanlon, Barry Murphy, Kevin Gildea, Joe Rooney, Paul Tylak, Michael Redmond and Dermot Carmody / Morgan Jones (alias The Dermot Morgans on the night!) will participate alongside musical acts including Kila, Chris De Burgh, Barry Devlin and Shay Healy, as well as another special guest. With all proceeds from 'An Audience Without Dermot Morgan' going towards the Dermot Morgan Comedy Bursary, you can rest assured that you will reap the rewards of your generosity in future generations of Irish comedy writers. Tickets are €35 and go on sale from ticketmaster at 9am on Wednesday May 14th.

20704Hector McDonnel: Exhibition of Paintings
Essentially a realist painter, Hector McDonnell is one of the finest figurative Irish artists of his generation. He is best known for his observations of daily life; launderettes, cafes, markets, bars, small shops and even lavatories, which somehow manage to imbue the mundane and ordinary with an extraordinary quality. Hector is also a keen traveller and has painted in Tibet, India, China and Rwanda, resulting in a series of etchings, facsimile sketchbooks and paintings that document his exotic travels. In 1964, McDonnell travelled to Munich and Vienna to study painting and sculpture, working for a time in the studio of Hans Wotruba, the last of Vienna’s great Secessionist sculptors. McDonnell then went on to study at Oxford, taking a degree in History, but spent many of his afternoons life-drawing at the Ruskin. By the time he finished his course, he had decided to become a full-time painter. McDonnell has exhibited widely in Europe and in 1979, he won Germany’s most illustrious art prizes, the ‘Darmstadter Kunstpreis’ which resulted in a major museum exhibition at the Kunsthalle Darmstadt, featuring over 200 of his paintings, drawings and etchings. Hector McDonnell’s exhibition runs until 20th May at the Solomon Gallery on South William Street, Dublin 2.
